Pat Mesiti – “It (escalated emotions) will raise your anxiety levels, it will make you feel good but it is not going to change anything out there, so prepare for the future. Get to a place where you are going to hit the ground running.”
Tarun Stevenson – So talk to me more about that, the process of managing the emotion, because I think you and I are both on the same page. As speakers and coaches, often we tell our audiences things that they should do but then it is a whole other story when you have to do it yourself. When you are alone and there is no audience, when you are sitting at home, what is the process of managing that emotion well so that it doesn’t overcome you?

Pat Mesiti – Number one, I am an emotional person as it is, number two; I am a very opinionated person and number three; I am an Italian. So sometimes I am just angry, other times I am sad, confused, scared or I think “Wow this is a great day” other times I go “Wow it’s nice not travelling” other times I go “Get me the hell out of here!” I’ve got a boat and jet ski sitting out there and they tell me I can not use it because of social distancing. Well, you can not get more socially distanced than a person on a jet ski in the middle of the water! Can someone explain that to me because I do not get it! What you have got to do is this, I do not encourage people not to feel the emotion. You have got to feel it but you have got to get on top of it, not let it get on top of you. Get on top of the fear, do not let it get on top of you.
You are not going to think clearly or strategically if you are in a melting pot of emotion. When I went for a walk this morning, I was on the phone doing things to try and keep my mind active. I also think the other thing is gratitude. Rather than thinking about what you don’t have, think, “What do you have?” What are you grateful for ? Are you praying? Are you meditating? What are you doing to get your mind active ? The other thing is this, I stopped watching the damn news.
That is one thing I would do, I mean, the news majors on drama and creates half the problem. There is a groundswell of anger among people. People have to learn to feel that but you just can’t go there. It is all about thinking, “What can I control? What can’t I control ? What can I do to actively keep my mind, body, soul and spirit up?”
Be creative. The way you can fix your emotions is to be creative, be proactive. What can you do ? What can you study ? What business can you start ? If someone out there just got the dole which was doubled, well, what are you doing with that money ? Why don’t you try to invest in a small business or do something like that ?
